CUMMING -- City of Cumming employees will likely receive a 4 percent pay raise in 2017 if next year’s budget goes through as proposed.

The budget is expected to pass, as councilmembers raised no concerns at a special called meeting Dec. 5 where they were presented with the 2017 numbers.

About $13.8 million is being proposed for the general fund and about $19.5 million for water and sewer, which combined will total about $33.4 million — a $2.2 million increase from last year.

Aside from the pay raise, the numbers largely remain the same as previous years, Mayor H. Ford Gravitt said.

The city’s general fund is proposed to increase by about $350,000 from last year, which is still a decrease from 2015’s final budget.

Nearly $2 million will be added to water and sewer.

“It’s pretty well the normal budget, but employees also got a 4 percent raise in November and December of this year,” Gravitt said. “They’ll get an additional 4 percent next year, too.”

Gravitt said the city has already held a public participation meeting, where no concerns were voiced.

“I’m pleased to recommend this to the City Council,” he said. “We have quality-grade employees, so this [raise] is just an incentive to keep them here.”

The meeting was specially called to approve a settlement with the Mashburn Family Trust, which will pay the city $1 million over a dam breach on the old Lake Alice that closed a portion of Sanders Road for several years.

The council is scheduled to vote on the budget Tuesday, Dec. 20 at their regular meeting.
